“Safe Space Camp” Grief Camp will occur the week of June 28 – July 2nd, 2010 as sponsored by  St. Anthony’s Medical Center Hospice and Horizon Hope Counseling.  There is no charge to participants.  This is the third year for the camp and I applaud the many volunteers and professionals who make the experience possible.  The camp is for adolescents and teens 11 to 17 years old who are dealing with the death of someone loved in their life.  I have worked for years in the practice of psychotherapy and counseling and have come to respect and appreciate the multiple ways in which persons grieve and process loss in their lives.  Grief and loss is rarely if ever simple – Complexity and isolation are at the heart of loss.

This intentional grief camp addresses each of these in respectful and compassionate ways.  Experiences such as “Safe Space Camp” can provide the atmosphere, staff and setting for part of a healing process in the critical development of children and adolescents.  The camp encourages processing and talking and honors the young person’s ambivalence, withdrawal and difficulty verbalizing and or even wanting to talk.  We honor the individual in whatever place they happen to be.  We honor, but encourage a move away from being alone in loss.

I ask your continued prayer for each of these young people as they seek healing following the loss of a loved one.  If you would like to know more about the camp for this year, please feel to call or email drsteve@horzonhope.org  or call the numbers below for camp registration.
